What processes are associated with rivers? Flashcards
What is Erosion?
Is the wearing away of land.
What are the four types of Erosion?
- Abrasion
- Hydraulic action
- Solution
- Attrition
What is Abrasion?
Stones carried along the river and washed into bed & banks, wearing them away
What is Hydraulic Action?
The sheer force of flowing water wash away any loose material on the bed and banks
What is Solution?
Slightly acidic river water dissolve rock made of calcium carbonate
What is Attrition?
Stones collide together and are broken down becoming smaller & rounder
What is Transportation?
Carried along river which is called its load
What are the four types of Transportation?
- Traction
- Suspension
- Saltation
- Solution
What is Traction?
Stones are rolled along the river bed by the force of water
What is Suspension?
Particles of clay are carried along in the flowing water
What is Saltation?
Small stones are bounced along the river bed by flowing water
What is Solution?
Some minerals dissolve in water. Limestone slowly dissolves
What is Deposition?
River slows down therefore has less energy to carry its load. Some of the material will de dropped (deposited)
What is a drainage basin?
An area of land drained by a river & its tributaries
