What Is Statistic? Flashcards
Define statistics
Statistics is the science of collecting, presenting, analyzing and interpreting of data
Kind of statistics
Descriptive statistics
Inferential statistics
Descriptive statistics
This kind of statistics include the methods and techniques used to describe the current situation with the collected data
Inferential statistics
This kind of statistics include the methods and techniques used to drive conclusions regarding population (whole) considering only sample (representative part of whole)
Population
The whole or aggregate of subjects of study about whom decision is needed
Sample
The selected representative part of the population used to reach the decision about population
Parameter
Any statistical measure computed from population data is parameter
Statistic
Any statistical measure computed from sample data is statistic
Variable
Any observed characteristic is called variable if it attains different values from person to person, place to place, time to time.
Constant
Any observed characteristic is called constant if it attains the same value from person to person, place to place or time to time
Qualitative variable
Also called an attribute
Any observed characteristic which is not numeral but one can feel the presence or absence of particular characteristic
Quantitative variable
Any observed characteristic which is numeral is called quantitative variable
Discrete variable
Any quantitative variable is regarded as discrete if it attains only finite number of values
Continuous variable
Any quantitative variable is regarded as continuous if it attains or can attain all possible values between the two known values
Complete enumeration
The researcher covers each and every element concerning the understudy population
