- not seen as humans but as possessions that could be traded
- provided labour without wages and no rights
- not permanent( earn freedom but working or paying)
- children of slaves didn’t automatically become salves too
- slaves captured in battle
- sold themselves into slavery to pay off debts
- enslaved for punishment for crimes
- with European colonization nature of slavery changed

Tobacco and sugar because it was now sold as everyday items and in those days people bought a lot of it so it contributed to the economy
