What is Science Flashcards
Science
Is an organized way of gathering and analyzing evidence about the natural world.
3 features that distinguish science from other human endeavors:
- Science deals only with the natural world, it is not concerned with any supernatural phenomenon of any kind.
- Scientists collect and organize information in an orderly way, asking for patterns and connections among events.
- Scientists propose explanations that are based on evidence not belief. Then they test those explanations with more evidence
Scientific Methodology
- Observing and Asking. 2. Making Inferences and Forming Hypotheses. 3. Conducting Controlled Experiments. 4. Collecting and Analyzing Data. 5. And Drawing Conclusions.
Observation
Involves the act of noticing and describing an event and processing in a careful orderly way.
Inference
This is a logical interpretation based on what scientists already know.
Hypothesis
Is a scientific explanation for a set of observations that can be tested in ways that support or reject it.
Controlled Experiment
An experiment in which one variable is changed/manipulated. This is known as an Independent Variable.
Dependent Variable
Is the variable that can change in response to the Independent Variable
Controlled Group
It’s exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group except for the Independent Variable.
Data
The data is your information that is collected, recorded, and analyzed during an experiment.
Draw Conclusions
Just draw your conclusion from your data.
