Q

zagzebski’s practical purpose of definition

A

when we seek to define knowledge in
order to recognise instances of knowledge and learn more about
how to get knowledge with the aim of achieving knowledge. they explain concepts in terms of concepts

Q

zagzebski’s theoretical purpose of definition

A

when we want to understand the concept of
knowledge and how it relates to other, related concepts, such as
truth, evidence etc. with the aim to find a more precise (real) definition that tells us exactly
what knowledge is. real definitions try to describe the nature of what we define

Q

necessary and sufficient conditions

A

eg. unmarried man is a bachelor. ‘unmarried’ and ‘man’ are necessary as ‘a man is a bachelor’ is incorrect and ‘an unmarried person is a bachelor’ is also incorrect as it could be a woman. together, they are sufficient for the definition of a bachelor

Q

zagzebski’s opinion on defining propositional knowledge

A

suggests that we should adopt the aim of providing
a real definition of knowledge at least until we can show that we
have failed to find one. The only way we will know that we cannot
give necessary and sufficient conditions for knowledge is by trying
and failing to succeed
