What is endocytosis and exocytosis Flashcards

1
Q

What are two processes which enable large quantities of materials (Solids or liquids) to be passed in and out of the cell

Q

What is the process of phagocytosis

A
  1. Solid materials is taken into the cell in a vesicle
  2. Lysosomes fuse with the vesicle, epting their enzymes into it
  3. The enzymes digest the material and the products are absorbed into the cytoplasm
  4. White blood cells called phagocytes remove cell debris and bacteria by phagocytosis

Q

What is the process of pinocytosis

A
  • Is similar to phagocytosis
  • Sometimes called cell drinking
  • HOwever in this case fluid is taken into the cell
  • The vesicles formed in pinocytosis are typically very small

Q

What is an example of exocytosis

A
  1. Useful secretions are released out of the cell e.g. digestive enzymes, hormones, or mucos
