What is endocytosis and exocytosis Flashcards
1
Q
What are two processes which enable large quantities of materials (Solids or liquids) to be passed in and out of the cell
A
- Endocytosis - out
- Excoytosis - in
2
Q
Are endocytosis and excytosis active or passive processes
A
- Both require need ATP for active transport
3
Q
What are the two types of endocytosis
A
- Phagocytosis
- Pinocytosis
4
Q
What is the process of phagocytosis
A
- Solid materials is taken into the cell in a vesicle
- Lysosomes fuse with the vesicle, epting their enzymes into it
- The enzymes digest the material and the products are absorbed into the cytoplasm
- White blood cells called phagocytes remove cell debris and bacteria by phagocytosis
5
Q
What is the process of pinocytosis
A
- Is similar to phagocytosis
- Sometimes called cell drinking
- HOwever in this case fluid is taken into the cell
- The vesicles formed in pinocytosis are typically very small
6
Q
What is an example of pinocytosis
A
A human egg can take up nutrients from surrounding cells in pinocytes
7
Q
What is exocytosis
A
Exocytosis is the reverse of endocytosism molecules exit the cells
8
Q
What is an example of exocytosis
A
- Useful secretions are released out of the cell e.g. digestive enzymes, hormones, or mucos
