deals with crimes by an individual or group against the state, cases are normally brought forward by the state and can lead to fines or imprisonment.

magistrates ‘ courts
A
most minor criminal cases (98% of the total) are heard her. Magistrates also have the task of identifying cases that are indictable (worth of a trial by the jury)

A
deals with more serious criminal cases and appeals from the magistrates’ courts

A
the criminal division of the court of appeal hears criminal cases on appeal from the lower courts.
