what is chemistry? Flashcards
what is chemistry
chemistry is a basic science that investigates how substances and materials interact with one another and how these materials change or stay the same in the presence of each other.
what is an atom
atoms are similar to building blocks, smallest pieces of matter.
what are the 3 states of matter
solid, liquid, gas
what is a colloid
a colloid is a state of matter suspended within another state of matter.
what is a saturated solution
A saturated solution is a solution that has dissolved as much solute as it is capable of dissolving.
what is surface tension
the film that forms on the surface of the water.
what is the periodic table
The periodic table is a list of all the elements in the universe
how do you read the periodic table
every table has
5 = atomic number
B= atomic symbol
10.81= atomic mass
what is the difference between an element and a compound
Elements are pure substances which are composed of only one type of atom. Compound are substances which are formed by two or more different types of elements that are united chemically in fixed proportions.
What is a mixture?
In a mixture you can see both substances without using a microscope.
What is the difference between pure substances, solutions, heterogeneous mixtures and homogeneous mixtures
- pure substances occur naturally in the environment
- In a solution you cannot tell there is more than one substance.
-heterogeneous mixtures are when you can see the separate mixtures
-homogeneous mixtures are when you can no longer see the separate parts
what does the concentration of a solution refer to
The concentration tells us how much solute has been added to one solution compared to another.
what is the difference between reversible change and irreversible change
- reversible change is when it CAN go back to its original state
- irreversible change is when it CANNOT go back to its original state
what is the difference between acidic, basic and neutral substances
-acidic substances have a pH of 0-6.9 ex, lemon juice, gastric acid,urine
-Neutral has a pH level of 7 ex, water
-basic substances have a pH of 7.1-14 ex, ammonia, bleach, sea water
what is litmus paper
litmus paper is used to tell us is a liquid is an acid or a base.
how does litmus paper show pH
litmus paper shows pH when it is red means that it is a acid and blue means it is a base
How to draw the elements
The answer is on google slides
what is cohesion
cohesion is an attraction of molecules in water
