What is Chemistry? Flashcards
Organic Chemistry
The study of all chemicals containing carbon.
Inorganic Chemistry
The study of chemicals that in general do not contain carbon.
Biochemistry
The study of processes that take place in organism.
Analytical Chemistry
The study that focuses on composition of matter.
Physical Chemistry
This area that deals with the mechanism, the rate, and the energy that transfers that occurs when matter undergoes a change.
Chemistry
The study of the composition of matter and the changes that matter undergoes.
Matter
Anything that has mass and occupies space.
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter in an object.
Technology
By which a society provides it’s members with those things needed and desired.
Pure Chemistry
The pursuit of chemical knowledge for it’s own sake.
Applied Chemistry
The research that is directed toward a practical goal or application.
Volume
The volume of an object is a measure of the space occupied by the object.
Extensive Property
A property that depends on the amount of matter in a sample.
Intensive Property
A property that depends on the type of matter in a sample, not the amount of matter.
Substance
Matter that has a uniform and definite composition. (Ex; gold, copper)
