What is a sound ? Flashcards
What is a sound?
It is periodic pressure waves travelling through a medium
What is a longitudinal wave?
It is wave propagation who is parallel to disturbance of medium. It is a sound wave.
What is the pitch of sound?
It is the frequency of sound which is interpreted by brain as pitch.
What is transferred trough the air via the sound wave?
Energy; The disturbance of the medium is energy stored in the medium.
What is the humn audible range?
20Hz - 20,000Hz
what is the audible range of a dog?
40Hz - 60,000Hz
In the absence of a medium can a sound propagate?
A sound cannot be propagate in a vacuum / the absence of a medium
The frequency of the sound is interpreted by brain as pitch.
Pitch (ton)
Marked by a high intensity or volume of sound.
Loud (bruyant/fort)
Sound depends on the amplitude of the sound wave involved.
Loudness (volume sonore)
When the frequency is low.
Low pitch (ton grave)
When the frenquency is high.
High pitch (ton aigu)
A note can represent the pitch and duration of a sound in musical notation.
Musical note
Sound which can be eared by human.
Range of human hearing
Wave propagation which is perpendicular to disturbance of medium.
Transverse wave
