What is a Mixture? Flashcards
What is a mixture?
Mixtures are constituted by more than one kind of pure form of matter.
How can we say that a mixture contains more than one pure substance?
- A pure substance cannot be separated into its chemical constituents by physical process.
- The composition of a pure substance is the same throughout.
- A pure substance will always have the same characteristic properties.
Hence, we can say that a mixture contains more than one pure substance.
HAVE YOU LEARNED ACTIVITY 2.1 ON PAGE 14?
Yes
Differentiate between homogenous and heterogenous mixtures.
HOMOGENOUS
1. uniform particles
2. size < 1nm
3. can’t see the particles when a beam of light is passed through - no Tyndall effect
4. not filterable
5. stable solution
HETEROGENOUS
1. non-uniform particles
2. size > 1nm
3. can see the particles when a beam of light is passed through - shows Tyndall effect
4. can be filtered
What is Tyndall Effect?
Tyndall Effect is a phenomenon in which the path of the beam of light becomes visible due to scattering of particles.
