What is a forest? Flashcards
What do roots do?
Absorb nutrients, provides stability, allows communication
What is a tree?
A tree is a single stem perennial with a vascular system
What does the stem/trunk do?
Gives structure, allows transport of material, and provides protection
What does the crown do?
The crown allows for chemical processes such as photosynthesis and respiration.
Six requirements for tree survival/growth?
Light, water, nutrients, heat, oxygen, carbon dioxide
Primary growth vs. secondary growth
Primary growth gives trees elongation while secondary growth gives trees outwards growth
What is the difference between photosynthesis and respiration?
Photosynthesis can only happen during day, while respiration occurs all the time
What is a forest?
A community of trees, shrubs, herbs, and other associated organisms and plants covering a considerable area utilizing sunlight, heat, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water, and soil nutrients as it attains maturity and reproduces itself.
