What is impurity?
Pollution. More powerful than purity, and gives a sense that purity is fragile and easily disrupted
What is purity?
Something that is free from contact with the impure. Nothing is there that shouldn’t be there
What’s the easiest way to stay pure?
To not get impure from the start. Preventative
Prohibition vs. abstinence?
Prohibition- we don’t have those things
Abstinence- I don’t do those things
How do we deal with impurity?
Changing what you think about it
Changing the way we do things (replacement)
Cleaning/bathing
Forms of asceticism (like fasting)
Transcendence- pure and impure do not exist
How is karma changed?
Certain rituals counteracts or alter the impact of prior actions. For example. The prascitta is a ritual to correct mistakes
How do you remove karma?
Raise your spiritual temperature “burn it off”
Do more good
Asceticism
Concerns over intention?
How much karma binds you?
Is your intention good enough?
What is forgiveness?
The gods decide you don’t suffer the consequences of your actions. Idea of grace
