what happened at the Brest Blockade?
In 1796 the situation deteriorated when the Netherlands and Spain changed sides against Britain. The Royal Navy, now facing far more enemy ships, were strained. The main British fleet was stationed at Spithead (off Portsmouth) leaving just 15 battleships to blockade Brest, where double that number of French ships were preparing to break out. 14,000 troops sailed from Brest with 44 French French ships (17 of which were of the line) all aiming to land in Ireland. Fortunately for Britain, after a week of gales, the French fleet abandoned it’s mission and returned to Brest.
what happened at the Battle Of Cape ST Vincent?
Jervis stationed the bulk of his force off Cadiz, facing the main Spanish fleet. Jervis’s fleet encountered a Spanish force almost twice the size of his own. Confident in the skills of his men Jervis attacked, his ships cutting through the enemy line. Nelson unconventionally fell out of Jervis’s line of battle and threw his ship across the path of the escaping enemy squadron against heavy odds and captured the much larger San Josef. Jervis had captured 4 ships and drove the enemy back into Cadiz and so was ennobled as the Earl of ST Vincent.
