What Are Transition Metals Flashcards
Where is the D block
Middle of the periodic table
Focus on first row Ti- Cu
What is a transition metal
A transition metal is d block element that can form one or more stable ions with a partially filled (incomplete) d subshell
Why do they fill up singly the double up
They repel eachother
Chromium and copper
Rather a full 3d subshell or half full because of stability
Donates one from 4s orbitals
Scandium and zinc
Zinc forms only 1 stable iron of Zn2+
Has a full subshell and is not partially filled
Scandium only forms 1 stable ion of Sc3+ and has a empty d subshell so it’s not partially filled
Physical Properties
High density, high melting point , sonorous
Chemical properties
Complex formations
Formation of coloured ions
Variable oxidation dates
Catalytic activity
