What are the effects of accelerated soil erosion? Flashcards
1
Q
Explain why there is reduced productivity?
A
- when soil is eroded, the most fertile topsoil is lost
- remaining soils may be less fertile so plant growth may be reduced
- erosion may leave shallower soil ( root penetration is more difficult )
2
Q
Explain why there is sedimentation in rivers and reserviors?
A
- deposited if water slows down and has less kinetic energy
- this reduces its flow capacity ( river is more likely to overflow and cause flooding following heavy rain )
3
Q
Explain why there is increased atmospheric particulates?
A
- wind erosion increases level of atmospheric particulates
- can make health problems such as asthma worse
4
Q
Explain why there is desertification?
A
- makes it more difficult for vegetation to grow
- contributes to further soil erosion and reduced rainfall
