What are Polymers? Flashcards
What are Polymers?
Large molecule formed by repeating pattern of atoms ( called monomers) connected in a chain.
What is Molecular Recognition? Give me a few examples
Ability of one molecule to attract and bind to another
EX: Allergies cause
Our sense of smell such as smelling a rose or newly cut grass, identify smoke
95% of the total weight of plants and animals is made up of which four atoms?
Hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and carbon
What are the four classes of Biological moleules?
Nuclei acids: Such as DNA and RNA; protien
Proteins: Molecules that perform different cell functions
Carbohydrates: Provide energy to every living organism
Small Molecules: Such as water oxygen and carbon dioxide
How many electrons does Na need to gain or lose to become stable according to OCTET Rule?
Lose 1 to be stable
How many electrons does Cl need to gain or lose to become stable according to OCTET Rule?
Gain 1 electron
Define Molecule:
Two or more atoms joined together by chemical bonds.
Define Ions:
When an atom loses or gains an electron
Define postive ion:
Atom loses electron, net charge is postive
Define negative ion:
Atom gains electron, net charge is negative
Define Ionic Bond:
Ionic bond is the bond formed between oppositevely charged ions such as NaCl
Define Covalent Bond:
The bond that is formed by sharing electrons between atoms
Name the type of nanoparticles that are used to make transparent sunscreen?
Zinc Oxide, ZnO, Titanium dioxide (TiO2)
Why sunscreen made up of larger particles is whiter, where as it appears transparent when made up of nanoscale particles?
light reflects completely off of large particles and smaller particles transmits.
How charging rate and storage capacity of the battery can be increased?
coat the battery with nanoparticles and coating of electrodes with nanoparticles
What is the cause behind more nutrients to be absorbed, and faster digesting rate in small intestine?
Our small intestines are made up of small folds and subfolds which increase the surface area in the inner lining.
Who came up with laws of motion?
Issac Newton
How quantum mechanics is different from classical mechanics or Newtonian mechanics?
Quantum mechanics is the model used to describe motion and energy of atoms and electrons. Classical mechanics which is based on Newtons law to describe motion and energy for macro sized objects.
Why is it easier to push an empty shopping cart as compared to full cart?
The full shopping cart has more mass needs more force.
If James is trying to push a car with a mass of 500 Kilograms, and it has an acceleration of 0.01 m/s ^2, what is the force being applied?
5N
A person is pushed forward into their seatbelt when a car stops. Which of Newton’s laws explains this motion?
Newton’s first law
Electron tunneling is used in microscope to image nanostructures
Scanning tunneling
