Wetland Ecosites Flashcards
MAS?
Shallow Marsh (MAS)
• Water rarely drops below the surface level or below a layer of moss or peat
• Shrub cover <25%
• Most vegetation is emergent herbaceous species
MAM?
Meadow Marsh (MAM)
• Water Seasonally drops below the substrate surface
• Parent material, mineral soil or bedrock as the substrate
• Tree cover <25%, shrub cover <25%. Mostly emergent herbaceous species
SWT?
Thicket Swamp (SWT)
• Water table rarely drops below substrate level
• Shrub cover >25% and dominant vegetation. Some emergent herbaceous species
• Tree cover <25%
SWC?
Coniferous Swamp (SWC)
• Water table rarely drops below substrate level
• Tree cover >25%
• Community dominated by coniferous trees (>75%)
SWD?
Deciduous Swamp (SWD)
• Water table rarely drops below substrate level
• Tree cover >25%
• Community dominated by deciduous trees (>75%)
SWM?
Mixed Swamp (SWM)
• Water table rarely drops below substrate level
• Tree cover >25%
• Community with mixed tree types- coniferous and deciduous trees each having at least 25% of canopy cover.
FEO?
Open Fen (FEO)
• Water table seasonally drops below the substrate level
• Tree cover <10%, shrub cover >25%
• Deep organic substrate (>40cm) of brown moss peat
• Alkaline to mildly acidic conditions
FES?
Shrub Fen (FES)
• Water table seasonally drops below the substrate level
• Tree cover <10%, Shrub cover >25%
• Deep organic substrate (>40cm) of brown moss peat
• Alkaline to mildly acidic conditions
FET?
Treed Fen (FET)
• Water table seasonally drops below the substrate level- rarely flooded, always saturated
• Tree cover 10-25%
• Deep organic substrate (>40cm) of brown moss peat
• Alkaline to mildly acidic conditions
BOS?
Shrub Bog (BOS)
• Water table seasonally drops below the substrate level- rarely flooded always saturated
• Organic substrate
• Tree cover <10%, Shrub layer >25%
• Deep substrate (>40cm) of sphagnum peat
• Acidic conditions
BOT?
Treed Bog (BOT)
• Water table seasonally drops below the substrate level- rarely flooded, always saturated
• Organic substrate
• Tree cover 10-25%
• Deep substrate (>40cm) of sphagnum peat
• Acidic conditions
