- many lost much of their Native American culture because it was either forgotten while at boarding school or never learned because they were taken away from parents and tribes

Many did not feel connected to either Native American or white culture.

- reduce conflict between settlers and Native Americans
What does the term reservation mean?
an area designated for a particular group of people and off limits to others unless they have permission
What does the term assimilation mean?
the process of learning and adopting the culture of a different group
What does the term sovereignty mean?
the right of a group of people to rule themselves
