Manifest Destiny
- the belief that god intended americans to possess the North American continent; term coined by newspaperman John L.O Sullivan
Jim Crowe Law-
laws that require forced segregation; or the separation of of trains,restaurants,hotels,schools and other social settings
Transcontinental railroad-
a continuous rail line that reaches the entire width of the continent; completed may 10th 1869
Union Pacific-
received a charter to build the first continental railroad; a railroad line that began building in omaha nebraska and built westward to meet the central pacific railroad line
Central pacific-
received a charter to build the first transcontinental railroad, a railroad line that began building eastward to meet the union pacific railroad line
Cattle Drive-
name for the process by which cattle were brought over land to northern railroad terminals
Great Plains-
the regions between the mississippi river valley and the rocky mountains; stretching from North to South, canada to southern texas
Open Ranges-
unfenced public lands where the cowboys herded cattle
Homestead Act-
provided 160 acres of land to any settler who would live on the land for five years and “improve” it by building and farming
Soddies-
Houses built of block of earth and sod
Barbed Wires-
Two twisted strands of wire studded with sharp metal bands at measured intervals
Plains Indians-
tribes such as the Cheyenne,the Comanche, and the Sioux who lived in the great plains region
Custer’s last stand-
another name for The Battle of Little Bighorn; were Custer and is force lost their lives
Wounded Knee massacre-
a sad and bloody epilogue to the Indian wars; happened when the army tried to band and disband an army of sioux that fled the reservation
