Q

What was the development of the government?

A

First, Mycenaeans each had a king for their own city-state. The king lived in the capital and surrounding villages paid taxes(relied & obeyed the King). Eldest son succeeded him. Later came the Oligarchy, small groups shared power, soon they groups were made of aristocrats & wealthy middle class. Citizens enjoyed the protections of military enforcement and they weren’t able to vote (little vote in how things were run). After that came the tyranny, wealthy merchants/others wanted rights, wealthy government refused. Former military leaders & others promised rights; they overthrew the government, gave rights & in return gifts were given from citizens, made them wealthy. Finally came democracy. Greece had a Direct Democracy, contained Citizens Assembly, all could attend (expect women & slaves), Decisions were made from debate & voting. The Council of 500 did the day - to - day running of Athens.
