Margaret River GI

A
  • Mediterranean climate
  • Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge (made of gneiss and granite) runs north to south for the length of the peninsula. GIves shelter to vineyards and moderates coastal breezes.
  • Cabernet, Shiraz, Merlot, SB, Semillon, Chard
  • Main sub region and most heavily planted is Wilyabrup, home to 3 of the “First 5” producers
  • Cabernet from Wilyabrup grown on red, gravelly loam soil
  • Leeuwin Estate/Cape Mentelle located in Wallcliffe, a cooler subzone following Margaret Rvr
  • “Golden Triangle” in Walcliffe: Leeuwin Estate, Cape Mentelle, Voyager Estate
  • Walcliffe is the top region for Aussie Chardonnay with Gingin clone planted widely. Named after the town north of Perth.
  • SBS- Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon,
    SSB- Semillo/Sauvignon Blanc. Unoaked or oaked. Oaked versions introduced by winemaker Stuart Pym
