West Chp 1 Flashcards

1
Q

Function of the lung?

A
  • Gas exchange
  • Allow oxygen to move from the air into venous blood, CO2 to move out
  • Also metabolizes some compounds, filters unwanted materials from the circulation, acts as reservoir for blood

Q

Fick’s Law of Diffusion

A

Amount of gas that moves across a sheet directly proportional to area of the sheet but inversely proportional to the thickness

Q

How able to have such large area for diffusion inside limited thoracic cavity?

A

Wrapping small vessels (capillaries) around an enormous number of small air sacs (alveoli)
Human lung = 500 million alveoli, each approx 1/3 mm in diameter
Lung generates large diffusion area by being divided into myriad of units

Q

Branching of airway

A

Trachea –> right, left main bronchi –> lobar bronchi –> segmental bronchi –> terminal bronchioles –> respiratory bronchioles –> alveolar ducts (lined with alveoli)
