Wendsday Flashcards
Scientific Method
A series of steps to follow, in order to answer a question or solve a problem
Observation:
Using one or more of your senses to gather information, called data
Inference:
A logical interpretation of the data based on your prior knowledge
Qualitative observation
(descriptive)
Examples: The book has a green cover,
Quantitative observation
(numerical)
Examples: The book weighs 5 kg
Form a Hypothesis
Make a prediction
Experiment
A procedure performed to test a hypothesis
Analyze Data
Analysis: make statements about what the data shows
Data is documented in data tables and displayed in graphs
. Draw a Conclusion
An explanation answering the original question that is supported by data from the experiment
Make a statement saying whether your hypothesis was supported or rejected by your experimental data
Controlled Experiment:
An experiment in which only ONE variable is changed by the experimenter
Variable:
Any factor that can change in an experiment
The Experimental Group:
the group exposed to the conditions of the experiment
The Control Group (The control):
The group which is not exposed to the conditions of the experiment. The standard to which the outcome is being compared to.
Independent Variable:
The variable the experimenter changes.
The variable that differs between the control group and the experimental group.
Dependent Variable:
Changes in response to the independent variable.
What is measured to compare the effect of the independent variable.
