Welding Terms Flashcards
Cascade Sequence
A combined longitudinal and cross-sectional sequence in which weld passes are made in overlapping layers.
Block Sequence
A combined longitudinal and cross-sectional sequence for a continuos multiple pass weld in which separated increments are completely or partially welded before interring increments are welded.
Fillet Weld
A weld of approxament triangular cross section joining two surfaces approxament at right angles to eachother in a lap joint.
The leg lenghts of the largest isosceles (Two legs of equal length) right triangles which can be inscribed with in the fillet weld cross section.
Back Sequence
A longitudinal sequence in which weld passes are made in the direction opposite to the progess of welding.
Heat Affected Zone
(HAZ)
The portion of the base metal whose mechanical properties or microstructure have been altered by heat of welding, brazing, soldering or thermal cutting.
Joint Penetration
The distance the weld metal extends from the weld face into a joint.
Root penetration
The distance that the weld metal extends into the joint root.
Weld Throat
Generally the shortest distance throught the cross section of the weld.
Root Reinforcement
Weld reinforcement opposite the side from which welding was done.
Face Reinforcement
(Weld Crown)
Weld reinforcement on the side of the joint from which welding was done.
Root Surface
The exposed surface of the weld opposite the side from wich welding was done.
Weld Face
The exposed surface of a weld face and the base metal.
Spot Weld
Plug Weld
A weld made in a circular hole in one member of a joint fusing that memeber to another member.
Slot Weld
A weld made in an elongated hole in one member of a joint fusing that member to another member.
Backing Weld
Backing in the form of a weld.
Back Weld
A weld made at the back of a single groove weld.
Surfacing Weld
A weld applied to a surface, as opposed to making a joint to obtain desired properties or dimensions.
Seam Weld
A continuous weld made between or upon overlapping members.
Faying Weld
The matting surface of a member that is in contact with or in close proximity to another member to which it is joined.
Edge Weld
A weld in an edge joint.
Groove Radius
(J or U Grooves)
The radius used to form the shape of a J or U Groove.
