Backhand welding
A welding technique in which the welding torch or gun is directed opposite to the progress of welding
Backgouging
Removal of weld metal and base metal from the weld root side of a welded joint to facilitate complete fusion and complete joint penetration upon subsequent welding from that side
Backing ring
Backing in the form of a ring, generally used in the welding of pipe.
Blowhole
A nonstandard term when used for porosity
Boxing
The continuation of a fillet weld around a corner of a member as an extension of the principal weld
Buildup
The surfacing variation in which surfacing material is deposited to achieve the required dimensions. See also buttering, cladding, and hardfacing.
Backing weld
Deposited from the root side of the joints before the groove is filled
Back weld
Is Deposited from the root side of the joint after the groove is filled

Solid shaded half circle
Back or backing symbol
Half circle but no fill
