  • The SFLC-IOD Division Chief and Deputy are the approving authority for welding waiver requests for Advanced Ship System Instruction and Support Team (ASSIST) personnel.
  • Coast Guard Engineer Officers (EO), Sector Engineering Section Chiefs, and Engineer Petty Officer (EPO) are the approving authority for welding waiver requests for Coast Guard personnel assigned to their units.
  • Coast Guard Base Naval Engineering Department Heads (NED) are the approving authority for welding waiver requests for Maintenance and Weapons Division (MWD) and Industrial personnel.
  • The SFLC Coast Guard Yard Industrial Manager is the approving authority for welding waiver requests for Coast Guard Yard personnel.

Non-Waivable Welds. Except during operational emergencies, only Coast Guard members (including Coast Guard Reserve serving on active duty and civilian employees) with an active certification in the appropriate procedure are allowed to perform non-waivable welds. The following welds are considered non-waivable:

    1. Hull shell plating (and attached frames, girders, and stiffeners)
    2. Structural deck plating (and attached stanchions and stiffeners)

  • b. Pressure vessels (any operating pressure)
  • c. Pressurized piping (above 500 psi operating pressure)
  • d. Propulsion and generator shafting.
  • e. Propellers and impellers
  • f. All materials other than steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, CuNi, brass and bronze
  • g. All materials with yield strength over 100 (kilopounds per square inch) KSI, such as flight decks and buoy decks
