Welding Flashcards
3G Welding Position
Welding vertical
Most common sizes of MIG wire
.023 , .030 , .035 , .045
Last 2 digits on an ARC welding rod refer to ______.
Flux or shielding on the rod. Higher the number, more shielding the rod has.
What do the first two digits on an ARC welding rod refer to.
The tensile strength per sq inch of weld. (60XX) rod = 60,000lbs of tensile strength per sq inch. (70XX) rod = 70,000lbs of tensile strength per sq inch.
3 most common MIG shielding gasses
Argon , Carbon Dioxide , Helium
How far do you open up the oxygen valve when setting up your torch ( oxy acetylene system ) ?
All the way
What color is the acetylene hose that is connected to the cutting torch ?
Red
4 Welding Process’
SMAW (stick) - shielded metal arc welding
MIG - metal inert gas welding
FCAW - flux core arc welding
TIG - tungsten arc welding
MIG welding was once known as ?
GMA - Gas Metal Arc
3 most common metals welded with MIG
Carbon steel , Stainless steel , Aluminum
MIG Electrode Code
Example: ( ER 70S-6)
ER- an electrode or filler rod that is used in either a wire feed or TIG welding.
70- A minimum of 70,000lbs of tensile strength per sq inch of weld.
S- Solid Wire
6- Amount of deoxidizing agent and cleansing agent on the electrode.
Most common wire used for welding carbon steel ?
ER 70S-6
MIG Welding Pros
- welds are clean with very little smoke.
- long welds with less restarts.
MIG Welding Cons
- welder cannot go too far from the MIG machine.
- wind is a major factor outdoors.
- always need a bottle of gas.
3 welding techniques
- Whipping the rod (moving back and forth motion)
- Circles to fuse the metal in a circular motion.
- Weaving a side to side motion ( for wider welds )
