Welding Flashcards
What must you inspect before oxy acetylene cutting begins?
- oxygen tank
- acetylene tank
- hoses for obvious damage
How do you conduct a leak check?
Pressurizing the hoses and watching the gauges for a drop in pressure(do not check with a lighter).
What valves need to be off?
The main valves and the torch valves. Regulator pressure adjusting screws need to be backed out with no pressure on gauges.
Where do you stand when turning on the oxygen cylinder valve?
To the side not facing the regulator.
Where do you stand when turning on the acetylene/fuel gas cylinder valve?
To the side opening it 1/2-3/4 turn
What are the steps to lighting the torch?
- open acetylene valve 1/8-1/4 turn(not opening causes black floaters).
- use torch striker
- open valve until smoke goes away and flame doesn’t jump from tip.
- open oxygen torch until inner cones are defined(known as neutral flame)
What are the basic welding processes?
- SMAW
- MIG
- FCAW
- TIG
SMAW
Shielded Metal Arc Welding(Stick Welding)
MIG
Metal Inert Gas welding
FCAW
Flux Core Arc Welding
TIG
Tungsten Arc welding
What are Arc Welding machines made up of?
- Ground Clamp
- Electrode Clamp
- Welding Rods(electrodes)
What are the types of welding rods?
6010 6011 6013 7018 7024
What do the numbers for welding rods signify?
- First 2 digits are for minimum of 10,000x number in pounds of tensile strength per sq. in.
- Last 2 digits are for the flux/shielding on a rod. Higher number means more shielding, flux, and/or metal that’s deposited.
What are the steps in setting up a welding machine?
- Select your rod
- Set the polarity
- Set machine to amperage range
