Welding Flashcards
What are the three different types of Welding?
- Shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) - stick welding
- Gas metal arc welding (GMAW) - MIG welding
- Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) - TIG welding
What is the use of Stick welding (SMAW)?
SMAW is used for heavy duty work with industrial metals.
What is the use of TIG welding (GTAW)?
GTAW welding is used to make fine welds on thin pieces of metal.
What is the use of MIG welding (GMAW)?
GMAW welding is used to join dissimilar metals with close melting points and metallurgical properties.
Remember to return library book
- It’s fast and easy
- It’s environmentally friendly
- It makes a strong weld
What are the negative aspects of Stick welding (SMAW)?
- Hard to control the heat
- Hard to control the quality of the weld
- Cracking
What are the positive aspects of TIG welding (GTAW)?
- Welds different types of metals
- No slag, sparks or smoke
- Can be used in all positions
What are the negative aspects of TIG welding (GTAW)?
- Higher level of UV rays
- Higher level of operator skill
- Requires good hand-eye coordination to have good results
What are the positive aspects of MIG welding (GMAW)?
- Can be used in all positions
- No slag removal
- High weld metal deposition rate
What are the negative aspects of MIG welding (GMAW)?
- Requires a shielding gas (cost)
- Only welds ferrous metals
- Complex equipment set
What are the four positions of welding?
1) Horizontal
2) Vertical
3) Flat
4) Overhead
Which welding position is the easiest and which is the hardest?
Flat is the easiest and overhead is the hardest.
Describe the process of Stick Welding. (DON’T NEED)
- Prepare the materials
- Set up the welding machine
- Strike an arc
- Move the electrode along the joint
- Control the speed and angle
- Finish the weld
Describe the process of MIG Welding.
- Put on safety gear
- Turn on gas
- Turn on welding machine and set wire speed and voltage
- Make sure clamp is attached to table
- Cut back wire
- Line up weld
- Start welding by pushing
- When done, use pliers to pick up
- Turn everything off and clean up
What safety equipment is needed for welding?
1) Welding helmet
2) Safety glasses
3) Welding coat
4) Gloves
5) Natural materials for clothes and shoes
