Q

Weirob’s Challenge to Surviving Death

A
  • to say that a person survives their own death is to say that something exists (post bodily) death and that it is the same person (as the one who died)
  • the challenge that Weirob set was to show that it is possible for them to survive their own death in a way that would give them comfort
  • giving them comfort is understood as giving them forward and backward-looking attitudes such as anticipation and remorse

Q

The Body

A

best thought as continuity (ordinary biological growth and change)

the problem with death is that the body is destroyed at death and we would have to make sense of resurrection as continuity

Q

The Soul

A

can survive death, but it doesn’t seem to connect in the right kind of way to our sense of self or self-identity

need not carry any memories to be the same soul, can’t support anticipation of future experience or regrets over past actions
