A

President

A

Head of state
Runs foreign affairs.
Takes no part in day-to-day government.
Elected by a vote of all electors every 7 years.
Chosen as a person.
Chooses the chancellor.
Can suspend the constitution and pass laws under Article 48, signed by Chancellor.
Can take control of the army in emergencies.
Can’t dismiss the Reichstag and call new elections.

A

Elected by secret ballot of people every 4 years.
Votes cast for party.
1 seat for every 60,000
Votes sorted by proportional representation.
Passes the laws of the country.

A

A

Members sent by the 18 Lander.
One for every 70,000
Could veto a law passed by the Reichstag.
Unless it has two-thirds majority or more.

Lander Local Government

A

18 local regions, each had a local parliament.
Run their own education, police, judiciary.
Federal laws always override the law of the land if conflicted.
Prussia no longer has special status among the states.
