What happened to the extremist parties during the middle years of the Weimar ?
A
The extremist parties of both left and right lost ground and altogether they polled less than 30% of the votes cast

How did parties sympathetic to the republic do ? (3)
A
- SPD made gains, winning 29.8% in 1928
- KPD recovered with 10.6%
- As a result, following the 1928 election a ‘Grand Coalition’ of the SPD, DDP, DVP and Centre was formed under Hermann Müller

Why was it difficult to form workable conditions in a coalition government? (3)
A
- Never a possibility of a coalition including SPD and DNVP because SPD believed in parliamentary democracy whereas DNVP fundamentally rejected the Weimar political system
- KPD remained totally isolated
- a right-centre coalition of Centre, DVP and DNVP created a situation in which the parties agreed on domestic issues but disagreed on foreign affairs
