Weight Status, Fitness & Motor Competence Flashcards
Why would it be necessary for PE educators to know and understand the importance surrounding one’s body composition?
Body Composition:
* Determines appearance
* Affects self confidence
* Related to working capacity
* Excess weight adds to workload
* Excess fat limits range of motion
* Obesity places one at risk of disease
How does increased weight add to an individual’s workload?
Increased weight means an individual’s body has to work harder which increases their workload.
How does increased weight affect range of motion?
Increased weight means an individual has excess fat which limits range of motion.
What are some risk factors with obestiy?
Coronary artery disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, etc.
Two factors that influence body composition in youth
Genetic and environmental factors
Which of these factors can be manipulated and how?
Two environmental can be manipulated:
* Diet
* Exercise
What is the general pattern that body composition during growth & development.
Lean body mass increases and fat decreases with those who are engaged in exercise out of school.
What did researchers observe in female gymnasts and non-training girls on body composition?
Height & weight followed similar trends in both groups, but fat levels increased in the control groups.
Why is it important to address lifestyle, particularly physical activity, during youth and adolescence?
It’s important because studies show that physical exericse causes loss in fat and increase in muscle during training.
How do body composition and weight status impact physical activity? Motor competence?
- Regluar exercisers maintain muscle and fat levels.
- Increased weight means lower motor competence
Why is physical activity an excellent strategy for combating obesity rates?
- Exercise can offset decrease in basal metabolic rate that accompanies caloric restriction
- Exercise promotes development of muscle tissue, which requires more for maintenance.
- Exercise expends calories.
