Weight Loss Surgery Flashcards
Lecture 12
What are the differences between ‘apple shape’ and ‘pear shape’ and describe who is more likely to have which shape?
Apple shape refers to more fat above the waist, which is commonly seen in men (more visceral fat)
Pear shape refers to more fat located below the waist, commonly seen in women.
Visceral vs peritoneal fat? Who is more likely to have which type and which is indicated in diabetes?
Men are more likely to have visceral fat, while women tend to have peritoneal fat.
Visceral fat is indicated in metabolic syndromes such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease etc.
What is Gastric Band Surgery?
Placing an inflatable band around the top of the stomach. It is minimally invasive, reversible and results in the patient feeling fuller.
What is are the cons of gastric band surgery?
Bands can become eroded, constricted or can slip.
Some people can become malnourished.
Often results in removal surgery.
What is a Gastrectomy?
Surgical removal of fundus of the stomach. This also stops the production of the ‘hunger hormone’. So patients often have to remind themselves to eat.
Patient takes a protein-sparing diet to remove glycogen stores.
Can aggravate reflux, risk of bleeding and risk of leak.
What is Gastric Bypass Surgery?
Stomach is not removed, by bypassed so the bolus enters directly into jejunum.
This stimulates the GLP1 hormone which switches off hunger and improves insulin sensitivity.
What is an Intra-Gastric Balloon?
A hollow silicon band is placed around the stomach near its upper end. Its can be inflated with isotonic fluid and be tightened or loosened over time. It is removed after 1 year.
Implemented endoscopically.
What are some common problems following weight loss surgery?
Constipation, thirst, excess skin and baldness.
