Weight Flashcards
What is weight?
Weight is a force and is the pull of gravity on a mass.
Distinguish between mass and weight
What is the formula for ‘Weight’
Weight = mass × gravitational field strength
W = m x g
What is gravitational field strength?
Gravitational field strength tells us how strong gravity is in a certain place.
It tells you how much force (in Newtons) gravity pulls on every 1 kilogram of mass.
It is shown as ‘g’
What is the gravitational field strength of the Earth?
10 N/kg on Earth.
What is the size of the gravitational field strength on the moon?
1.6 N/kg on Moon
Is the force of gravity greater on the Earth or on the Moon?
Earth - the gravitational field strength on Earth is 10 N/kg, but only 1.6 N/kg on the Moon.
Find the weight of a 3kg folder on earth?
An astronaut has a mass of 80kg.
What is his weight on earth?
An astronaut has a mass of 80kg.
What is his weight on the moon?
