Weeks 2 - 3 Flashcards
Net charge of atom?
Neutral
Charge of an electron?
-1
Charge of a proton?
+1
Equation for atomic mass of an element?
Atom mass = number protons + number neutrons
How is the atomic number of an element determined?
Equal to the number of protons it has
Define chemical element and give example
Substance that consists entirely of a single type of atom.
Eg. Oxygen or Hydrogen
Define chemical compound and give example
Substance consisting of molecules that contain more than one type of atom.
Eg. Sodium chloride has sodium and chlorine atoms so is a compound
What is the SI base unit of length?
Meter
How is the periodic table structured in terms of mass?
Lightest elements from top to bottom and left to right.
Lightest element is in the top left, ie. hydrogen
What is the major strength of the ball-and-stick molecular model?
It best shows the relative positions and spacing of the atoms.
What is the major strength of the space-filling molecular model?
Best shows the relative sizes and shapes of atoms
What’s the basic strategy for adding or subtracting fractions?
Manipulate the denominators so they are the same then just add the numerators.
Basic strategy for multiplying fractions?
Multiply the numerators and the denominators.
Basic strategy for dividing fractions?
Take the reciprocal of one side then multiply
What’s an isotope?
An isotope is a version of an atom with a different number of neutrons
