Identity is a concept that generally refers to the qualities and expressions that characterises a person or group (Arnould et al. 2023).

Identity also includes what an individual or group aspires to be in the eyes of others, and it is constantly performed and negotiated in everyday market-mediated interactions.
How does the identity have implications for marketing?
- Could use data analysis to personalise emails and ads to fit the consumer’s lifestyle and identity.
- Offer wide ranges on products or personalised products to reach wide target market.

Psychological Perspective = The PERSONAL IDENTITY, SELF-CONCEPT, or the DISTINCTIVE QUALITIES or TRAITS that make an individual unique.
What is the sociological and cultural perspective on identity? (Arnould et al. 2023)
Associated with socially constructed ideas about COLLECTIVE MEEMBERSHIP, SOCIAL PRACTICES, TASTES, STATUS, and AUTHENTICITY.

“Core Self” = Structured resources to create coherence. E.g. “life themes” and “life projects” (McCraken 1986; Thompson et al. 1989).
