Week3 epithelial Flashcards
What are epithelial cells?
groups of cells that line or cover things
what are the 5 functions of epithelial cells?
protection absorption excretion (leaves the body) secretion (stays in the body) recieving sensory input
what is the side closest to the surface called?
apical
what is the side furthest from the surface called?
basement membrane
Avascular
lack of blood vessels or blood supply
What junction attaches the epithelium to the basement membrane?
hemi desmosomes
Whats another word for basement membrane?
basal lamina
What type of cancer does not pass the basement membrane?
benign
What type of cancer does cross the basement membrane?
malignant
Microvilli
hair like protrusions from the apical surface
Cilia
hair like protrusions
What does cilia do?
moves things around
Goblet cell
secretes mucus (looks like a wine glass)
Keratin
sits on the surface of the skin
keratinized epithelium
keratin on the apical surface
What are the 4 types of junctions
Tight junction
desmosomes
gap junction
hemi desmosomes
Tight junction
nothing can move through
desmosomes
come together like velcro
- most common junction
Gap junction
attachment with openings on it
hemi desmosomes
connect the epithelium to the basement floor
How are epithelium classified
by shape and number of layers
squamous
flat
Cuboidal
cube like
columnar
looks like columns
simple
1 layer
stratified
2 or more layers
pseudo stratified
nucli are all over the place
what are the 3 shapes we use to classify epithelia?
squamous
cuboidal
columnar
Transitional Epithelial
changes when the bladder is full vs empty
What are the 2 types of glands?
endocrine
exocrine
How are glands classified?
unicellular
multicellular
What are the 3 ways products get released
merocrine glands
apocrine glands
holocrine glands
Merocrine glands
product is made but cells are fine
apocrine glands
looks like a triangle. Top part of the “triangle” pinches off
Holocrine
product stored in granules until needed then enter the cell and self destruct
