Week2 Flashcards
What ADSL stands for?
Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line;
Killer Applications:
Email;
FTP - File Transfer Protocol;
WWW (World Wide Web);
P2P;
What are the benefits of Networks?
Resource Sharing; Reduced cost and easier installation of software; Improved communications; More Workplace flexibility; Reduce running cost; Centralized administration;
What are the requirements for a network?
At least 2 computers;
A resource needs to be shared;
A transmission medium;
A communication agreement (protocol);
What is a Network Protocol?
Is the set of rules established for the users to gain control of the network to exchange information;
What OSI stands for?
Open Systems Interconnection
What is the OSI model?
It is used to define how data communication occurs on computer networks;
This model is divided into layers, each of which provides services to the layers above and bellow.
Layers are associated with protocols and devices.
What are the benefits of the Reference Models?
Encourages standardization; Modularizes the communication process; Standardized communication process; Encourages vendors to build on each other's developments through use of a common framework Speeds development;
What are the OSI layers?
7 - Application 6 - Presentation 5 - Session 4 - Transport 3 - Network 2 - Data Link 1 - Physical
What is Physical Layer (01)?
Physical and electrical medium for data transfer.
Unit of measurement is bits.
100Base-T
100 - Bandwidth
Base - means baseband
T - stands for twisted-pair cabling
What is Data Link Layer (DDL - 02)
DLL is usually implemented on NIC and net. devices such as switches.
This layer establishes, maintains, and decides how transfer is accomplished over the physical layer.
It does so through physical addresses.
Unit measurement is frames.
