Comparison of two pairs that have the same relationship ( a is to b as c is to is d ) (example cat is to meow as dog is to bark)
Analogy
An over exaggeration. Example I am so hungry, I could eat a horse.
Hyperbole
A familiar phrase that means something other than what it literally says. Example it’s raining cats and dogs.
Idiom
State that one thing is something else; is a comparison but does not use the word like or as. Example my hands are icicles
Metaphor
A word that sounds like what it is describing; a sound effect. Example murmur, creak, drip, pop, zip, wheeze
Onomatopoeia
Gives an idea, object, or animal equalities of a person. Example the darkness wrapped its arms around me.
Personification
A comparison using the words like or as. Example the milk was white as snow
Simile
And under exaggeration. Example I’ll be there in one second
Understatement
The repetition of the same letter at the beginning of two or more words. example 9 new nickles are needed now
