Where are the conchae?
Lateral walls of nasal cavity, superior, middle and inferior
What are the functions of the nose?
Respiration - humidify, warm and filter air
Smell
Local secretions from sinuses and nasolacrimal duct
What are the four paranasal sinuses?
Frontal
Ethmoid
Maxillary
Sphenoid
How is the pharynx divided?
Nasopharynx - nose to lower border of soft palette
Oropharynx - lower border of sp to top of epiglottis
Laryngopharynx - below epiglottis
What is the glottis?
Two vocal cords and opening called rima glottidis
How do vocal cords move?
Vocal ligaments controlled by intrinsic muscles of the larynx - adduction to close abduction to open
What sort of epithelium lines the upper respiratory tract?
Pseudostratified columnar ciliates with goblet cells
What does the recurrent laryngeal nerve supply?
All intrinsic laryngeal muscles except one
Nerve damage to RLN will result in what common symptom?
Horse voice
Where does the RLN arise from?
Vagus nerve in root of the neck on right side and thorax on left side.
Curves around subclavian artery on right and around arch of aorta on left
Then back up the neck to larynx
