Analogy
Story or poem in which characters, setting, and events stand for other people or events or for abstract ideas or qualities
Allegory
A very brief story told to illustrate a point or serve as an example of something
Anecdote
Author addresses an inanimate object, idea, or person who is either dead or absent
Apostrophe
Character, action, or situation that is a pattern of human life generally; a situation that occurs over and over again in literature, such as a quest, an initiation, or an attempt to overcome evil (ex: myths)
Archetype
Rhetorical device of opposition in which one idea or word is established, and then The opposite idea or word is expressed as in “I love and hate”
Antithesis
Terse statement on a serious subject
Aphorism
Repetition of the same vowel sounds in poetry
Assonance
Narrative poem composed of quatrains
Ballad
Refers to words combining sharp or harsh sounds
Cacophony
Single rhythmic unit such as a prepositional phrase (of human events) or noun phrase (our sacred honor)
Cadence
Pausing or juncture separating words or phrases within lines of poetry
Caesura
Seize the day; concerned with the shortness of life and the need to act on or enjoy the present
Carpe diem poetry
Release of ones emotions regarding plot or characters
Catharsis
Elaborate figure of speech that makes a surprising connection between two seemingly dissimilar things
