Week One Flashcards
What are oral motor exercises?
Exercises aiming to increase the strength of the tongue?
Used to help with poor orolingual control
What is effortful swallowing?
A maneuver in which patients are instructed to swallow “with effort”
May be used for patients with vallecular residue secondary to decreased BoT to PPW and inadequate epiglottic deflection
Thought to increase the pressure on the bolus, resulting in decreased residue
However, this exercise has shown the negative effect of reducing anterior hyoid movement.
Therefore, this may be ok for rehabilitation for a patient with residue as a result of BoT to PPW approximation. Not suitable for residue caused by inadequate epiglottic deflection or decreased UES opening.
May be necessary to pair this exercise with the Shaker to minimise negative affects to hyoid movement.
Also may be bad to use when delayed pharyngeal swallowing is an issue as the effortful may prolong the swallowing related events.
