Week five - Alternatives to WAIS for intelligence testing Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Standford-Binet Intelligence Scale - 5th Edition?

A

A measure of intelligence.

Used to involve a ratio measure of intelligence - based on age.

Ratio = mental age/actual age x 100

Ratio was replaced by deviation IQ. This is based on comparing people to a normal distribution. What we currently use.

Q

What changed in each version of the Standford-Binet IQ test?

A

Different ways of administering.

Initially Standford-Binet attempted to measure children and adults with the same test.

7
Q

What does the SB-5 measure that the Wechsler scales do not?

A

Measures intelligence in a different way than the WAIS.

It is a bit harder to use than the WAIS.

Fits more with theories of intelligence.

SB-5 allows for a greater range for testing, which allows for testing with individuals who have more pronounced cognitive disabilities.

Complex and imprecise administration procedures - more risk of non-standardised administration?

Q

Raven’s Progressive Matrices test were attempt to make an intelligence test that could be used cross-culturally.

What are some issues that arise with these tests?

A

They are ‘non-verbal’ tests.

However, they still require verbal comprehension - e.g. understanding the rules of the task when it is being explained to you.

Q

Why would you use Raven’s Progressive Matrices over WAIS or SB-5?

A

It involves less verbal testing than the others.

Gives a good estimation of G.

Q

What is the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT)?

A

Uses an easel with pictures. Test-taker puts their finger on the picture that they think corresponds to what the test-administrator tells them to do.

Raw scores are standardised to have a mean of 100 and has a sd of 15 - like all IQ tests.

17
Q

What are the benefits of PPVT?

A

Allows for administration to people with impaired reading ability/low literacy.

Has two parrallel forms. Not many IQ tests have this option.

Easy to administer.

18
Q

What intelligence test would you use for a person with low literacy?

A

PPTV. Does not require reading ability.

19
Q

What are some of the problems with the IQ tests discussed so, when it comes cultural appropriateness?

A

Normal curve used for scores are based on WEIRD samples.

Idea of intelligence is based on

20
Q

What is the KICA and when would it be used?

A

The KICA is used for assessing dementia symptoms in Australian First Nations people, as well as other cognitive functions.

21
Q

What are some of the cultural considerations we considered in the lecture, when it comes to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

22
Q

What are some steps that psychologists can take when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in a culturally appropriate manner?

Q

What are Westermann (1977) recommendations for working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?
