Week five - Alternatives to WAIS for intelligence testing Flashcards
What is the Standford-Binet Intelligence Scale - 5th Edition?
A measure of intelligence.
Used to involve a ratio measure of intelligence - based on age.
Ratio = mental age/actual age x 100
Ratio was replaced by deviation IQ. This is based on comparing people to a normal distribution. What we currently use.
What changed in each version of the Standford-Binet IQ test?
Different ways of administering.
Initially Standford-Binet attempted to measure children and adults with the same test.
What is Carrol’s structure/theory of intelligence?
Does the WAIS or the SB-5 fit within Carrol’s theory of intelligence more?
SB-5
What is the definition of fluid intelligence?
What is the definition of crystalised intelligence?
Why would someone use a SB-5 instead of a WAIS?
What does the SB-5 measure that the Wechsler scales do not?
Measures intelligence in a different way than the WAIS.
It is a bit harder to use than the WAIS.
Fits more with theories of intelligence.
SB-5 allows for a greater range for testing, which allows for testing with individuals who have more pronounced cognitive disabilities.
Complex and imprecise administration procedures - more risk of non-standardised administration?
What are alternatives to WAIS for intelligence testing?
The SB-5.
What is an acceptable reliability coefficient?
0.8 acceptable.
0.9 ideal.
What types of validity are considered when doing psych testing?
Is the SB-5 more useful for assessment of individuals with limited language abilities?
Is it better for assessment for of individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions?
Yes.
It has more nonverbal domain subsets?
Yes.
Raven’s Progressive Matrices test were attempt to make an intelligence test that could be used cross-culturally.
What are some issues that arise with these tests?
They are ‘non-verbal’ tests.
However, they still require verbal comprehension - e.g. understanding the rules of the task when it is being explained to you.
What was Spearman’s idea of G and S?
Is Raven’s test aiming to measure G?
Yes. It aims to measure general cognitive ability.
Why would you use Raven’s Progressive Matrices over WAIS or SB-5?
It involves less verbal testing than the others.
Gives a good estimation of G.
What is the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT)?
Uses an easel with pictures. Test-taker puts their finger on the picture that they think corresponds to what the test-administrator tells them to do.
Raw scores are standardised to have a mean of 100 and has a sd of 15 - like all IQ tests.
What are the benefits of PPVT?
Allows for administration to people with impaired reading ability/low literacy.
Has two parrallel forms. Not many IQ tests have this option.
Easy to administer.
What intelligence test would you use for a person with low literacy?
PPTV. Does not require reading ability.
What are some of the problems with the IQ tests discussed so, when it comes cultural appropriateness?
Normal curve used for scores are based on WEIRD samples.
Idea of intelligence is based on
What is the KICA and when would it be used?
The KICA is used for assessing dementia symptoms in Australian First Nations people, as well as other cognitive functions.
What are some of the cultural considerations we considered in the lecture, when it comes to working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
What are some steps that psychologists can take when working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in a culturally appropriate manner?
What are Westermann (1977) recommendations for working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?
