Week Eleven - Warblers Flashcards

Yellow-rumped Warbler - Parulidae
Yellow sides and butt patch, which gives it the nickname of “Butterbutt”.
Has a partial eyering and a small, yellow patch on the head.
Very common.
Song starts very strong, then fades - particularly distinct and “colorless”.

Palm Warbler - Parulidae
Has yellow undertail coverts and a distinct chestnut cap.
A yellow belly with very fine streaking and also a brown cheek patch.

Pine Warbler

Common Yellowthroat - Parulidae
Dark mask, white supercilium, and a brown cape.
A super loud, fast, “witchity-witchity-witchity-witchity-wit!” Very bouncy!

Yellow Warbler - Parulidae
All yellow with a very clean, black eye. Fine, reddish belly streaking.
Has yellow spots on it’s tail where most would have white spots.
A bright, musical call that sounds like “sweet-sweet-sweet little more sweet!”

Ovenbird - Parulidae
Looks like a Wood Thrush, but rather than having circular spots on the breast, has streakier looking.
A dull orange crown stripe and a pink bill.
A staccato “teacher-teacher-teacher-teacher” for a call.

Lousisiana Waterthrush - Parulidae
White supercilium that is very bright. Usually white underparts and pinky feet.
Funky foragers!
“Bayou Bayou Bayou, calm down y’all!”

Northern Waterthrush - Parulidae
Duskier belly and breast, with a tan supercilium rather than a bright white.
Has a streaked throat also.
A call similar to LOWA, but :chirpier” - also, it tends to trill downwards.

Yellow body, slate wings, with olive backing. Has a partial black eyebar.

Prothonary Warbler

Black-and-white Warbler

Blackpoll Warbler - Parulidae

A pretty drab bird. Olivey wing, and a hard-to-see orange crown.
Has a slim shape, and a slightly pointed bill. They also have a warm yellow on the undertails.

Tennessee Warbler - Parulidae
A white supercilium that is relatively short. Has a clear white throat, with a greyer belly and vent.
Has olivey wings.
Has a three-part series of loud, spitting trills. The third part is faster, higher, and louder.

Nashville Warbler - Parulidae
Grey head, white eyering, and a lil bit ‘o rust on the head. The white eyering especially stands out on it’s grey head.
Has an olive-green back and NO wingbars.
Has a kind of trilly call, that sounds halfway between a Tenneessee and Pine Warbler call.

Connecticut Warbler - Parulidae
Has a grey head that extends down into throat and breast.
An olive back, and generally a bird that is less bright than other warblers. Has a white eyering. Has a pale bill.

Mourning Warbler - Parulidae
Has a black breast, grey hood, and NO eyering. Back is kinda olive-y.
Has a black patch on the breast thats like a pseudo-neckace, but the size of this patch is highly variable.
Grey hood and a lack of a white eyering is very unique for this warbler.

American Redstart - Parulidae
Is a very active forager!
Looks kinda oriole-y. Has a black and orange fanned tail.
Has an emphatic, trilly call, with a highly pitched upwards trajectory on the last note. Some people describe it as “sneeze-like” due to the buildup of energy.

Cape May Warbler - Parulidae
Has a brown crescent around the eye. Has a yellow chest with very thin black stripes, which kinda looks like a long necklace.
One, white wing-bar.

Cerulean Warbler - Parulidae
Blue, white, and black, with two white wingbars that fade into black towards the tips.
In serious, severe decline. “Bungee-jumps” from nests they sit on for too long, only opening their wings to fly when they’re close to the ground!
Call is a very buzzy sound tht doesn’t match how pretty the bird is! Buzziness that leads into a trill.
“ZEEEEE” trill towards the end of the call.

Wilson’s Warbler - Parulidae
All yellow with a black hat, giving it a “kid at the baseball game” kind of look.
Long thin tail and a thin bill, but stubby and round.

Northern Parula - Parulidae
Goregous, with a partial eyering, yellow throat, yellow belly, and an orange necklace.
There is also a bit of orange on the back, and white flanks + tail.
A long, very intense buzzy trill, which intensfies and quickens as it goes on.
