What is a psychoactive substance?
A substance that alters mood, behaviour or both
What is substance use?
Taking moderate amounts of a substance in a way that doesn’t interfere with functioning
What is polysubstance use?
Using multiple substances
What is substance intoxication?
Physical reaction to a substance (e.g. being drunk). Influenced by how much is taken, biological reaction i.e. impairment, mood changes
What is substance abuse?
Formerly a disorder in the DSM - no longer.
Use that interferes with life functioning > a maladaptive pattern of substance use leading to clinically sig impairment or distress as manifested by one or more symptoms occurring at any time in a 12 month period.
What is substance dependence?
Formerly a disorder in the DSM - no longer
A maladaptive pattern of substance use, leading to clinically sig impairment or distress as manifested by three or more symptoms occurring any time in a 12 month period > more severe
What is substance use disorder?
Current disorder in the DSM. At least two symptoms in the last year that interfered with life of bothered the patient a great deal.
This disorder can develop when when drug is not being used for intoxicating purposes i.e. benzodiazepines for insomnia treatment
What is physiological dependence?
Two conditions:
tolerance > needing more of a drug to obtain same effect
withdrawal > physically responding negatively when a drug is no longer taken
What is addiction?
Can be defined by either physiological dependence but also drug seeking behaviour i.e. spending too much money on a particular substance
