Week 9 Flashcards
What is Qualitative Data
Data that is represented as words or catergories
- Color, smell, blood type
What is Quantitative Data
Numeric data
- Height, Weight, Points Scored, Dollars Earned
What are the two types of quantitative data and describe them
- Discrete data (It’s only a finite amount of data ex: rolling a dice)
- Continuous data (Infinite amount of possible values)
What is the population in a set
It’s the total set of observations.
ex: If studying obesity in men. the population would be the set of weights of all men in the world
What is a sample
Subset of the study population
What are bin “Indicators” and what do they represent
( Means not including
[ Means including
What is the mean in a dataset
It’s the average of the dataset
What is the median of a dataset
It’s the midpoint of the distribution of a sorted dataset
What is the mode of a dataset?
It’s the most repeating value in the dataset
What is the geometric mean of a dataset
Nth root of a product of n numbers
How do you calculate the percentile of a dataset
Assume you are looking for k percentile on a dataset of size N
Calculate the rank of the percentile with (k/100) * (N +1)
If n is not a whole number, round up and take the data point found at n
If n is a whole number, take the n and n+1 points and average
