Q

plasticity

A

ability of the organism to alter its phenotype in response to environmental input
learning is a subset of plasticity
because of this, the same genotype can often produce multiple phenotypes depending upon the environment
plasticity is the outcome of natural selection
e.g. being tanning - different people are different depending on their environment

Q

developmental induction

A
  • solitary versus gregarious forms of locust
  • best grouping behaviour depend upon local population density
  • two morphs
  • which morph develops depends on number of collisions in early life

Q

operant conditioning

A
  • behaviours that are rewarded increases frequencies
  • behaviours that are punished decrease in frequencies
  • allows the individual to discover what works in their particular environment
