week 9 Flashcards
1
Q
plasticity
A
ability of the organism to alter its phenotype in response to environmental input
learning is a subset of plasticity
because of this, the same genotype can often produce multiple phenotypes depending upon the environment
plasticity is the outcome of natural selection
e.g. being tanning - different people are different depending on their environment
2
Q
different types of plasticity
A
- developmental induction
- imprinting (filial, sexual)
- associative learning
3
Q
developmental induction
A
- solitary versus gregarious forms of locust
- best grouping behaviour depend upon local population density
- two morphs
- which morph develops depends on number of collisions in early life
4
Q
filial imprinting
A
when an animal after birth attaches itself to basically the first thing they see?
5
Q
sexual imprinting
A
a process where parents influence sexual choices
6
Q
operant conditioning
A
- behaviours that are rewarded increases frequencies
- behaviours that are punished decrease in frequencies
- allows the individual to discover what works in their particular environment
