Norms, rules and procedures agreed to in order to regulate an issue area
What are the two most important sources of international law?
Treaties and international custom
What is Customary international law?
• Develops slowly over time as states recognise practices as appropriate and correct (ex. diplomatic immunity)
What are the two essential characteristics of International organisations?
- Centralisation 2. Neutrality

What are TAN’s?
Transnational advocacy networks •play important role in changing behaviour by promoting normative values. Help states cooperate by providing info and monitoring cooperation
What are the two different types of human rights?
- Negative rights: require state inaction (ex. don’t torture) 2. Positive rights require state action (ex. provide public edu)
What are the three qualifying conditions to be a refugee?
- well-founded fear of persecution 2. presence outside home country 3. incapacity to enjoy protection of one’s own state
What is non-refoulment?
no state shall repel or return a refugee to a territory in which his life or freedom would be threatened
